(For Keeping Parents & Students Informed About Sex Ed Lesson Content)

Alberta Education is without definitive guidelines on classroom content when it comes to human sexuality programs of study. This leaves the door wide open for Junior-high teachers (or invited community guests) to discuss oral sex, anal sex, same sex, masturbation, where to purchase products and any other subject(s) …at their personal discretion.

I know this because I’ve been provided with recommended reference sources and a grade-eight lesson plan to prove it – information provided by my child’s health teacher and without other parents’ knowledge, denying them of the right to opt their children out of any controversial health outcomes.

Not only does the lesson plan reveal highly inappropriate content (especially for the age level it was intended for) but it was presented via a brainstorming method that isolated specific sexual activity with specific stages of personal growth suggesting that, if a student wasn’t engaged in certain sexual activity by a certain age, they clearly weren’t developing at their expected rate of puberty. Hardly the message that I desire for my child(ren) to hear, especially from adult strangers who don’t know or love them and who won’t continue to be there for them when their developing sexual activity results in another mouth to feed.

Alberta Education does have “directives” (not legally binding) encouraging classroom content to be age-appropriate. Yet, while our government recognizes that there is a wide range (up to 3 years) in the development of students in any one classroom, there is no legislative commitment to prevent inappropriate material from being introduced to a classroom with such a diverse age/maturity spread amongst the classroom’s youth.

So the goal of this blog is to become an interactive online voice for parental communities in favor of restoring modesty protocols in the classroom during Sex Ed presentations. Eventually, I hope to refer to it in an official capacity as a demonstration of what parents are/are not willing to condone.

To that end, I’m looking for parental AND STUDENT support that insists on having complete unfettered and timely access to the classroom material intended for presenting the human sexuality outcomes for junior and senior high programs of study in our province. This information is essential to making an informed decision on whether or not our children will attend these optional outcomes.

This isn’t meant to be a soapbox to fuel the “Abstinence/Safe Sex” debate, nor is it a kind of stone-throwing or attack of any kind against anyone.

This petition is simply a “calling out” of what some parents are learning as inappropriate assumptions made by adults entrusted with our children’s care, without our knowledge…and our disapproval of those decisions.

Please help me by leaving a comment of, “I Agree” after reading my petition (you can leave longer bouquets/arrows here).

Thank You in advance for your support.
